HMRC app sees record surge

Nov 20, 2023

According to the latest data, self-assessment payments via the HMRC app have trebled since April 2023.

The data reveals that nearly 100,000 customers leveraged the app's speed and simplicity to pay £121 million in tax for the 2022/23 tax year, marking a threefold increase from the same period last year.

Introduced in February 2022, the HMRC app offers a secure and free platform for users to not only make payments but also access personal details such as Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR), National Insurance number, and PAYE information required for tax returns.

The app caters to all users, not just those utilising the self-assessment system, while the self-assessment function is also available in Welsh.

Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC's director general for customer services, said:

"We all have busy lives, so it makes sense that more and more customers are choosing to access their personal tax information and pay their tax bill through the HMRC app.

"It gives them the flexibility and convenience they need - as well as peace of mind that their self-assessment is sorted. Go to GOV.UK and search ‘HMRC app' to find out more."
